What is the difference between User CAL and Device CAL?
User CAL is assigned to a user, allowing that user to connect to the server from any number of devices. Device CAL is assigned to a device, allowing any number of users to use that device. User CAL is better for mobile employees. Device CAL is better for shared workstations and shift-based teams.
Do CAL 2022 licenses work with newer servers?
Windows Server 2022 CAL licenses are backward compatible — they work with Windows Server 2022 and earlier versions. They are not compatible with newer server versions. If you plan to upgrade your server, you should also account for the cost of new CAL licenses appropriate for the target server version.
