SQL Server 2014 Standard — 50 Device CAL

Package of 50 device access licenses for Microsoft SQL Server 2014 Standard

▢ 50 Device CAL Instant delivery ■ Perpetual license Original Microsoft license

◈ What is SQL Server 2014 Device CAL?

SQL Server 2014 Device CAL is an access license assigned to a specific physical device, allowing any number of users on that device to connect to an instance of SQL Server 2014 Standard. SQL Server 2014 remains an exceptionally popular version, especially among companies using ERP and CRM systems deployed several years ago. If your organization relies on applications that require SQL Server 2014, this 50 Device CAL package ensures full licensing compliance at a cheap price.

Key benefits

Bring your existing infrastructure into compliance

Many organizations discover during an audit that they are missing CALs. This 50 Device CAL package lets you close the gap quickly and achieve full compliance with Microsoft licensing requirements before the auditor comes knocking.

Proven stability

SQL Server 2014 has been running in thousands of businesses for more than a decade. Its stability, compatibility with existing applications, and predictable performance are why many organizations deliberately continue using this version.

Lowest licensing costs

SQL Server 2014 CALs are among the cheapest licensing options across all SQL Server versions. For companies with a limited IT budget, this is an ideal solution: full Standard Edition functionality at a fraction of the cost of newer releases.

Ideal for shared devices

Device CAL covers the device, not the individual user. In factories, warehouses, and retail stores where multiple employees share the same terminals across shifts, this is the most cost-effective licensing model.

In-Memory OLTP

SQL Server 2014 was the first release to introduce the In-Memory OLTP engine (Hekaton), which processes transactions directly in RAM, up to 30 times faster than traditional disk-based tables. Ideal for applications that require minimal latency.

Solid security foundations

SQL Server 2014 offers Transparent Data Encryption (TDE), built-in auditing, encryption key management, and advanced backup capabilities. It is a proven protection layer for business-critical data.

Why buy from Licensier?

Licensier is one of the few stores that still offers SQL Server 2014 CAL licenses at attractive volume prices. Because many companies need to top up licensing for existing installations, we keep this product in stock on a regular basis. Our team can help assess whether it makes more sense to expand your current environment or plan a migration to a newer version. Every order is fulfilled electronically with instant delivery and documented with a VAT invoice.

How to activate SQL Server 2014 Device CAL?

  1. After purchase, you will receive an email with your license key and documentation
  2. Verify that SQL Server 2014 Standard is installed on the server in “Server + CAL” mode
  3. If the server has not yet been activated, enter the product key in the SQL Server configuration
  4. Create a Device CAL register — a table assigning each license to a specific device
  5. Record device identifiers: computer names, serial numbers, or asset numbers
  6. Keep the register together with the VAT invoice as your complete licensing documentation
  7. Device CAL is a legal entitlement document authorizing access and does not require installation on client devices

⊙ User CAL vs Device CAL — when is Device CAL the better choice?

Device CAL works best in organizations where many employees share the same computer workstations. Examples: factories (3 shifts x 50 employees = 150 people using 50 computers), retail stores (several cashiers on one POS terminal), hospitals (shift staff using shared stations). In these scenarios, 50 Device CALs can replace a potential 150+ User CALs. User CAL is better for office environments where each employee has their own workstation and an additional laptop, because then you license 50 people instead of 100 devices.

Frequently asked questions

Is SQL Server 2014 still safe to use?

SQL Server 2014 remains stable and reliable. Although mainstream extended support ended in July 2024, Microsoft offers Extended Security Updates (ESU) for businesses that want to continue receiving patches. In addition, database servers are also protected through firewalls, VPNs, and network policies.

Can I migrate from 2014 to a newer version and keep my CALs?

Unfortunately not. SQL Server 2014 CAL licenses only grant access to version 2014 instances or earlier. Upgrading the server to 2016, 2017, 2019, or 2022 requires new CAL licenses matching the newer version.

Why is SQL Server 2014 so cheap?

License pricing decreases over time, and SQL Server 2014 has been on the market for more than 10 years. The lower price does not mean lower quality. It is still a full Standard edition with In-Memory OLTP, Columnstore Indexes, Backup Encryption, and many other enterprise-class features.

How many devices are covered by this package?

This package includes 50 Device CAL licenses. Each license is assigned to one physical device such as a computer, terminal, or kiosk. An unlimited number of users can use each licensed device.

Does Device CAL require activation on the computer?

No. A Device CAL license is a legal document authorizing the device to access SQL Server. It does not require software installation or technical activation on the client workstation. Activation applies only to the SQL Server itself.

Which Windows systems is SQL Server 2014 compatible with?

SQL Server 2014 Standard officially supports Windows Server 2008 R2, 2012, 2012 R2, and 2016. It is not officially certified for Windows Server 2019 and 2022, although in practice it often works. For full compatibility, we recommend Windows Server 2012 R2 or 2016.

Will I receive a VAT invoice?

Yes, a VAT invoice is included with every order. It is available in the customer panel and sent by email. It serves as the official proof of purchase required for tax purposes and Microsoft licensing audits.

Does Device CAL require a separate server license?

Yes. The CAL model requires two elements: a SQL Server 2014 Standard server license and CAL access licenses for each device. Without the server license, CALs alone do not authorize legal use.

Who is SQL Server 2014 recommended for?

We recommend SQL Server 2014 for companies that: (1) already run systems requiring this version and need additional licensing, (2) have a limited IT budget and are looking for the cheapest licensing option, (3) use older ERP/CRM applications that are not compatible with newer SQL Server versions.

Can I mix Device CAL and User CAL?

Yes, Microsoft allows both CAL types to be used at the same time. You can have 50 Device CALs for shared workstations and separately purchased User CALs for mobile employees. Both license types grant access to the same SQL Server instance.
