Activation instructions
- Download the SQL Server 2014 Standard ISO image from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) or MSDN
- Mount the ISO image and run the `setup.exe` installer as administrator
- Select “New SQL Server stand-alone installation” or “Add features to an existing installation”
- On the product key screen, enter the received 25-character license key
- Select the Standard edition and the components to install (Database Engine, SSIS, SSRS, SSAS)
- Configure the service account, collation, and authentication mode (Windows or Mixed Mode)

SQL Server 2014 Standard vs Enterprise — which one to choose?
The Standard edition supports up to 128 GB of RAM and offers Basic AlwaysOn AG (1 database per group), which is sufficient for most business use cases. Enterprise removes the RAM limit and adds full AlwaysOn AG for multiple databases, table partitioning, and advanced compression. If your database fits within 128 GB of RAM and does not require advanced partitioning, Standard is the most cost-effective option. A 24-core license key allows you to cover large production servers at a much lower cost than Enterprise.

What does a “24 Core” SQL Server license mean?
SQL Server licensing in the Core-Based model requires all physical processor cores in the server to be covered. A 24-core license covers a server with up to 24 physical cores, for example 2 processors with 12 cores each or 4 processors with 6 cores each. The minimum requirement is 4 cores per processor and 8 cores per server.
Does SQL Server 2014 still receive support from Microsoft?
Mainstream Support ended on July 9, 2019, and Extended Security Updates were available until July 9, 2024. After that date, SQL Server 2014 remains fully functional, but it no longer receives new security updates. Many companies still use this version in production environments protected by additional security layers.
Can I install SQL Server 2014 on Windows Server 2022?
SQL Server 2014 is officially supported on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 through Windows Server 2016. Installation on newer operating systems such as 2019 or 2022 may work, but it is not officially supported by Microsoft. We recommend using a supported version of Windows Server or considering migration to a newer SQL Server edition.
How many databases can I run with one license?
The SQL Server Standard license does not limit the number of databases within an instance. You can create as many databases as your available server resources allow. The 128 GB RAM limit applies to the entire SQL Server instance, not to a single database.
Do I need additional CAL licenses?
No — the Core-Based licensing model does not require additional CALs (Client Access Licenses). A 24-core license covers an unlimited number of users and devices connecting to the server. This is the main advantage of the Core-Based model compared to the Server+CAL model.
Can I use this license in a virtual environment?
Yes — the Standard edition with Core-Based licensing allows you to run SQL Server in up to 2 virtual machines (OSEs). The virtual cores assigned to the VM must be covered by the license. If you need more than 2 VMs, consider an Enterprise license, which offers unlimited virtualization.
What are the hardware requirements for SQL Server 2014?
