Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise is an advanced solution for email management and collaboration in large organizations. It provides users with high availability, security, and performance. Microsoft Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise is specifically designed to meet modern business requirements. Implement this solution in your company.
Enterprise-class mail platform with support for up to 100 databases and advanced archiving
Exchange Server 2019 Enterprise is the edition designed for large-scale organisations, supporting up to 100 mounted mailbox databases per server. Combined with Database Availability Groups (DAG), this edition makes it possible to build highly available and scalable email infrastructures for thousands of users. It is the ideal choice for corporations, public institutions, hospitals, and multi-site companies that require database segmentation, reliability, and full control.
The Enterprise edition supports up to 100 mounted databases per server, compared to 5 in Standard. This allows you to segment mailboxes by department, location, priority, or size. Separate databases simplify backup management, single mailbox recovery, and I/O performance optimisation.
Database Availability Groups with support for 100 databases enable resilient email infrastructures with automatic failover. Each database can have up to 16 copies distributed across servers in different data centres, making this an excellent solution for organisations that require zero downtime and disaster recovery protection.
Built-in archiving moves older messages into a separate archive mailbox accessible directly in Outlook and OWA. Users retain convenient access to historical emails without overloading the primary mailbox. Archiving policies can automatically move messages after a defined period.
A full set of compliance tools is included: In-Place Hold for legal preservation, eDiscovery Search for searching multiple mailboxes at once, Retention Tags for automatic archiving or deletion, Journaling, and Information Rights Management (IRM) for organisation-wide message protection.
Advanced DLP rules with built-in templates for European regulations such as GDPR and PCI-DSS. Automatic detection of national ID numbers, credit card numbers, and medical data in messages and attachments. You can block, encrypt, or warn users, with flexible settings for each compliance scenario.
Voicemail integration with email means voice messages appear as attachments in the inbox. Automatic transcription and forwarding improve efficiency. OWA delivers a complete webmail experience with drag-and-drop support, Focused Inbox, and intelligent filtering.
Seamless coexistence with Microsoft 365 / Exchange Online. Shared address book (GAL), cross-premises free/busy, and mailbox migration between environments are all supported. The Hybrid Configuration Wizard automates setup, making this ideal for organisations gradually moving to the cloud.
An optimised engine with SSD metacache, support for high mail volumes, and advanced I/O management. Compatible with servers equipped with 256 GB RAM and multiple processors. Load balancing and geographically distributed DAG deployments ensure excellent performance for global organisations with thousands of users.

Enterprise is required when you need more than 5 databases (Standard: 5, Enterprise: 100), want to segment mailboxes by department or location across separate databases, require advanced In-Place Archive capabilities, or support thousands of users with different retention policies. For organisations with up to 500 users and a simple structure, Standard is often sufficient. Enterprise is a long-term investment for businesses planning growth and operating in complex compliance environments.

Exchange CAL Standard provides access to core features such as email, calendar, contacts, OWA, and ActiveSync. Exchange CAL Enterprise is an additional license that requires Standard and unlocks In-Place Archive, In-Place Hold, advanced DLP policies, Information Rights Management (IRM), and Unified Messaging. For organisations with compliance requirements, both CAL types are typically needed.
Yes. You can change the server edition from Standard to Enterprise by entering an Enterprise key in Exchange Admin Center (Servers → Enter Product Key). This does not require reinstalling Exchange or migrating mailboxes. Once the new key is applied, you immediately gain the ability to create up to 100 databases.
It depends on your high availability and performance requirements. A typical setup is 2 to 4 Enterprise servers in a DAG for 5,000 users, providing redundancy and load balancing. Each server should ideally have 256 GB RAM, 48+ CPU cores, and fast SSD or NVMe storage. With Enterprise, you get 100 databases per server, allowing optimal distribution of mailboxes across databases and servers.
Exchange 2019 supports encryption at multiple levels: TLS 1.2/1.3 for transmission, BitLocker for data at rest, S/MIME for end-to-end email encryption (with user certificates), and Information Rights Management (IRM) with Azure RMS. DLP can also automatically encrypt messages containing sensitive data.
In-Place Archive is a separate archive mailbox visible in Outlook and OWA alongside the main mailbox. Archiving policies (Retention Tags) automatically move messages older than a defined number of days into the archive. The archive can be stored on a different database or server than the primary mailbox. Users can search both the main mailbox and archive at the same time.
Recommended specifications include a multi-core x64 processor (minimum 8 cores, recommended 16 to 48), 128 to 256 GB RAM (minimum 128 GB for 100 databases), and fast JBOD disks with at least 3 database copies in a DAG. Operating system: Windows Server 2019 Standard or Datacenter with Desktop Experience. A separate AD domain controller is recommended, as Exchange should not be installed on a domain controller.
Yes. Database Availability Groups can include servers in different physical locations and data centres. Database copies can be replicated between sites to provide disaster recovery protection. Automatic failover can transfer mailbox services to a secondary data centre. This requires a properly configured WAN connection between locations.
After 14 October 2025, Exchange 2019 will continue to operate fully, but it will no longer receive new security updates. Microsoft plans Exchange Server SE (Subscription Edition) as its successor. Companies may also migrate to Exchange Online in Microsoft 365. We recommend planning your migration strategy in advance, and our team can help you choose the most suitable path.
